By adding some welcome new mechanics, Resident Evil Revelations 2 is a fun frightfest. Doubly so if you buy the retail version, which add some fun extras.

GA:
As far as episodic experiments go, I think Capcom has done a really excellent job with their handling of Resident Evil Revelations 2. Releasing weekly episodes, as opposed to monthly or bi-monthly episodes, was an interesting approach, and one that I think worked in their favor here. The story elements and cliffhangers presented at the end of episodes 1 through 3 were strong enough to keep players coming back, in addition to the gameplay elements. But the wait wasnt so long that it was difficult to keep players interested, or make them feel like they were missing out for too long if they opted to wait for the final product. Resident Evil Revelations 2 has been a pretty good example of how not to alienate your fanbase with episodic releases, and its an example I wouldnt mind seeing followed by other companies going forward.

Aidan from Awesome Games writes: 'Check out our video review of Resident Evil Revelations 2: Episode Two!
The story doesnt go much further beyond introducing new characters and killing some of them off in the same chapter until the final moments of Barrys campaign which pulls out an intriguing plot twist connecting the game to the mainstream series entries. A decent package all in all but were already halfway through the games story now and very little has happened so far chapter three needs to pick up the pace a little bit.

The quality of the first Revelations was an achievement in itself, given how mediocre Resi spinoffs had been until that point (no, Code Veronica doesn't count). Revelations 2 is a more ambitious and original production, comfortable with moving further away from the main series and through this gaining a distinct identity. This is a Resident Evil game, but it also feels like its own game. Quite apart from the plot threads and sacrificial NPCs, that's the biggest revelation of all.

PA:
Now that its over and done, I cant say I rightly understand why Capcom chose to initially release Resident Evil: Revelations 2 as a series of four episodes rather than just one game.
I enjoyed having a little classic-meets-modern (but mostly classic) Resident Evil treat each Tuesday over the last month, but I dont see how it was a boon to storytelling or play. If anything, the experience felt shoehorned into the format, with environments and story designed to fit a certain space rather than to naturally fit the flow of the adventure.
